Have you ever thought about what controls your sleep? What makes you tired, and what makes you wake up?
Well that function is regulated by a part of your brain called the brain stem. Your spinal alignment plays an important role in the quality and quantity of your sleep.
HERE IS HOW:
As we just mentioned, your brain and nerve system are in control of your sleep cycles and patterns. Your nerve system is protected by your spine.
If your spinal alignment/posture is optimal, there is little pressure or stress on your nerve system. Your brain and your body are effectively communicating. As a result your brain is able to effectively control your sleep wake cycles. However, if your spinal alignment is off or your posture is forward and slouchy this puts pressure on your brain and nervous system.
This pressure creates a stress on the nervous system can make you ‘wired’. When your nervous system is in this state, (known as a sympathetic dominant state) you have difficulty getting to sleep and often have broken or light sleep.
HOW CHIROPRACTIC CAN HELP SLEEP:
Chiropractic adjustments create optimal spinal alignment and upright posture, allowing a clear path of communication between the brain and the body. As a result this can help move your nervous system away from the sympathetic ‘wired’ state to a more calming restful state known as the parasympathetic state. This is more conducive for a good night’s sleep.
Many of our patients notice that they experience a deeper more restful sleep after an adjustment.
Beyond that, we at Proactive Health Chiropractic help educate you on the correct sleeping positions for your body to prevent injuries and re-occurrences of injuries, in particular neck pain and headaches.
