If you have experienced neck pain before, you know how debilitating it can be. The cervical spine (bones of the neck) are very susceptible to injury. There are many types of conditions affecting the neck area including: muscle strains/sprains, disc injury, spinal dysfunction, whiplash, torticollis, pinched nerves, arthritis and facet injury.
Neck pain can present as a dull ache, muscle soreness, shooting pain, stiffness, locking and limited range of motion.
WHAT CAUSES NECK PAIN?
There are many possible causes and no two cases are the same, however, here are some of the most common causes:
- Poor posture/spinal alignment
- Prolonged use of devices (text neck)
- Poor sleeping position
- Repetitive strain injury
- Sports injury
- Underlying disease or pathology
Once other diseases have been ruled out, the primary cause is often poor spinal alignment/poor posture. In particular when your head position goes forward. If the bones of your spine are not aligned well, it places significant pressure on the bones, ligaments, muscles, discs and nerves surrounding the neck region.
This poor alignment issue creates all kinds of pain and dysfunction in the neck itself. It also puts pressure on the nerves of your neck, which can result in headaches, migraines, jaw pain, numbness and tingling in the arm.
MASK THE SYMPTOMS or CORRECT THE CAUSE?
There are two ways you can go about fixing the problem:
1. MASK THE SYMPTOMS:
Mask the symptoms of the pain through medication, or ‘quick fix’ methods. Sure, this will help remove the immediate pain you are experiencing, however, it is not correcting the underlying cause of the problem, your spinal alignment.
The problem is likely to return.
Many people spend lots of time and money fighting the pain without ever addressing the true cause of their problem. These people have many bouts of pain or headaches throughout their life. As they age, the duration and severity of their episodes tends to increase.
2. CORRECT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM:
Instead of just masking the symptoms as they appear, you can look for what is causing the pain and resolve that issue.
Imagine having a stone in your shoe. It would cause pain every time you step on it.
You could mask the pain by taking a panadol, putting a band-aid on your wound or wear some thick socks while you walk. Or, your could remove the stone from your shoe. Chiropractic’s focus is ‘removing the stone.’
The ‘stone’ in the case of neck pain is poor spinal alignment/poor posture.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC HELP?
At Proactive Health Chiropractic we take a holistic approach to helping you. Assessing your entire body, rather than just looking at your neck in isolation.
We do this through assessing and correcting your posture. Your posture is your spinal alignment, how well your spinal bones balance. By correcting your alignment, this takes pressure off the muscles, ligaments, discs, and nerves of the neck/cervical spine. The removal in pressure allows the body to heal naturally.
Much like removing the stone from your shoe. Once the stone is gone, the wound will heal.
Correcting your spinal alignment with chiropractic care helps you get relief as well as preventing the problem from returning in the future.
By ensuring your spine has great alignment it also takes pressure off your nerve system. Your nerve system is responsible for sending and receiving messages from your brain and body. A clear communication pathway between the brain and body allows your body to heal and function at its very best.
