Low back pain is one of the most common complaints we see as chiropractors. It is estimated that 3.7 Million Australians suffer from back pain. Overall, 70%-90% of Australians will experience back pain or sciatica at some stage in their life.
Back pain can present in many different ways. The pain commonly consists of a dull ache, muscle soreness, shooting pain down the leg (sciatica), stiffness, locking and limited range of motion.
WHAT CAUSES BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA?
Back pain and sciatica have many causes and no two cases are the same. However, here are some of the common causes:
- Poor Posture
- Prolonged Sitting
- Repetitive Poor Movement
- Poor Lifting Technique
- Sports Injuries
- Underlying Disease or Pathology
Once other diseases have been ruled out, the primary cause is poor spinal alignment/poor posture. If the bones of your spine are not aligned well, it places significant pressure on the bones, ligaments, muscles, discs and nerves surrounding the low back.
This alignment issue creates all kinds of pain and dysfunction in the low back region.
MASK THE SYMPTOMS or CORRECT THE CAUSE?
There are two ways you can go about fixing the problem.
1. MASK THE SYMPTOMS:
Mask the symptoms of your pain with medication, or other ‘quick fix’ methods. Sure, this will help remove the immediate pain you are experiencing, however, it is not correcting the underlying cause of the problem, your spinal alignment.
The problem is likely to return.
Many people spend lots of time and money combating pain without ever addressing the true cause of their problem. Because of this, they often have many pain episodes throughout their life, then as they age, the duration and severity of their back pain increases.
2. CORRECT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM:
Instead of just masking the symptoms as they appear, you can look for what is causing the low back pain or sciatica and resolve that issue.
Imagine having a stone in your shoe. It would cause pain every time you step on it. You could mask the pain by taking a panadol, putting a band-aid on your wound or wear some thick socks while you walk.
Or, your could remove the stone. Chiropractic’s focus is ‘removing the stone.’
The ‘stone’ in the case of low back pain is poor spinal alignment/poor posture.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC HELP?
Chiropractic is fantastic at dealing with back pain and sciatica. At Proactive Health Chiropractic we have great success with helping people of all ages resolve their pain and live a life free of limitations.
We do this through assessing and correcting your posture. Your posture is your spinal alignment, how well your spinal bones balance.
By correcting your alignment, this takes pressure off the muscles, ligaments, discs, and nerves surrounding the back and pelvis. The removal in pressure allows the body to heal naturally.
Much like removing the stone from your shoe. Once the stone is gone, the wound will heal.
Correcting your spinal alignment with chiropractic care helps you get relief of back pain and sciatica as well as preventing the problem from returning in the future.
By ensuring your spine has great alignment it also takes pressure off your nervous system. Your nervous system is responsible for sending and receiving messages from your brain and body.
A clear communication pathway between the brain and body allows your body to heal and function at its very best.
