KNEE PAIN OVERVIEW:
Knee pain is a very common problem for many people, particularly sports people, and people over 40.
There are many types of conditions associated with knee pain including: muscle tears, sprains, meniscus injuries, fractures, arthritis, patella tracking syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome, gout, ACL rupture, Osgood Schlatters disease, Osteochondritis dissecans.
Knee pain can have a dull ache, be sharp or pinching, feel stiff or have limited range of motion.
WHAT CAUSES KNEE PAIN?
The various types of knee pain have different causes:
- Trauma such as sporting injuries
- Poor spinal alignment
- Excessive weight
- Lack of muscle strength and flexibility
- Prolonged Sitting
- Underlying disease or pathology
Once we have ruled our more serious causes of knee pain such as a fracture or ACL rupture, the most common types of knee pain we see are mechanical in nature. Meaning knee pain caused by poor spinal alignment and muscle imbalances.
Spinal alignment or postural issues of the low back and pelvis often create referred problems in the knee. If the spine and pelvis is not aligned well, this places significantly more pressure on the knee joints, leading to pain, dysfunction and injury.
MASK THE SYMPTOMS or CORRECT THE CAUSE?
There are two ways you can go about fixing knee pain:
1. MASK THE SYMPTOMS:
Mask the symptoms of knee pain through medication, or ‘quick fix’ methods. Sure, this will help remove the immediate pain you are experiencing, however, it is not correcting the underlying cause of the problem, your spinal alignment.
The problem is likely to return.
Many people spend lots of time and money addressing the pain without ever addressing the true cause of knee pain. They have many bouts of knee pain throughout their life. As they age, the duration and severity of their knee pain tends to increase.
2. CORRECT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM:
Instead of just masking the symptoms as they appear, you can look for what is causing the knee pain and resolve that issue.
Imagine having a stone in your shoe. It would cause pain every time you step on it. You could mask the pain by taking a panadol, putting a band-aid on your wound or wear some thick socks while you walk. Or, your could remove the stone. Chiropractic’s focus is ‘removing the stone.’
The ‘stone’ in the case of knee pain is poor spinal alignment/poor posture causing referred problems in the knee.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC HELP KNEE PAIN?
At Proactive Health Chiropractic, we take a holistic approach to helping you recover from knee pain. We assess your entire body, not just looking at the knee in isolation.
We do this through assessing and correcting your posture particularly in your low back and pelvis. Your posture is your spinal alignment, how well your spinal bones balance. By correcting your alignment, this takes pressure off the muscles, ligaments, discs, and nerves of the low back and pelvis. The results in less pressure being placed on the muscles ligaments and knee joint itself. Allowing the knee to heal natural.
Much like removing the stone from your shoe. Once the stone is gone, the wound will heal.
Correcting your spinal alignment with chiropractic care helps you get relief of knee pain as well as preventing the problem from returning in the future.
By ensuring your spine has great alignment it also takes pressure off your nervous system. Your nervous system is responsible for sending and receiving messages from your brain and body. A clear communication pathway between the brain and body allows your body to heal and function at its very best.
