There are many types of headaches/migraines therefore it is important to know what type you are dealing with; tension headaches, migraines without aura, migraines with aura, cluster headache, dehydration headaches, cervicogenic headache and sinus headaches are all common.
All headaches can be very debilitating and limit your daily activities.
WHAT CAUSES HEADACHES/MIGRAINES?
The wide variety of headaches have many different causes. For example:
- Poor posture (head forward of shoulders)
- Dysfunction in the cervical spine
- Sinus issue
- Jaw dysfunction
- Underlying pathology
The first step with dealing with headaches is to determine which type of headache you are suffering with. It is important to rule out other diseases or conditions first. The most common types of headache we see in our practice are tension headaches, migraine and cervicogenic headache.
These type of headaches are all linked to a common cause – poor posture, particularly when the head sits forward of the shoulders.
This postural imbalance places significant stress on the cervical spine (neck) which in turn puts the muscles, ligaments and nerves under stress. When the nerves of the neck are under stress it causes pain through the entire head. This is where headaches and migraines can arise.
MASK THE SYMPTOMS or CORRECT THE CAUSE?
There are two ways you can go about fixing headaches/migraines:
1. MASK THE SYMPTOMS:
Mask the symptoms of headaches/migraines through medication, or ‘quick fix’ methods. Sure, this may help improve the immediate pain you are experiencing. However, it is not correcting the underlying cause of the problem, your spinal alignment.
The problem is likely to return.
Many people spend lots of time and money addressing headaches without ever addressing the true cause. They have many bouts of headaches/migraines throughout their life. As they age, the duration and severity tends to increase.
2. CORRECT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM:
Instead of just masking the symptoms as they appear, you can look for what is causing the headaches/migraines and resolve that primary issue.
Imagine having a stone in your shoe. It would cause pain every time you step on it. You could mask the pain by taking a panadol, putting a band-aid on your wound or wear some thick socks while you walk. Or, your could remove the stone. Chiropractic’s focus is ‘removing the stone.’
The ‘stone’ in the case of headaches/migraines is poor spinal alignment/poor posture.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC HELP HEADACHES AND MIGRAINES?
We do this through assessing and correcting your posture. Your posture is your spinal alignment, how well your spinal bones balance. By correcting your alignment, this takes pressure off the muscles, ligaments, discs, and nerves of the cervical spine. Reducing stress from the neck allows the headaches to clear naturally, while preventing further bouts, all without medication.
Much like removing the stone from your shoe. Once the stone is gone, the wound will heal.
By ensuring your spine has great alignment it also takes pressure off your nerve system. Your nerve system is responsible for sending and receiving messages from your brain and body. A clear communication pathway between the brain and body allows your body to heal and function at its very best.
