ELBOW PAIN OVERVIEW:
We understand how debilitating elbow pain can be. Elbow pain is particularly common among people who play sports and people who do skilled manual work.
There are many kinds of elbow pain, including: golfers elbow (inside of the elbow), tennis elbow (outside of the elbow), elbow arthritis, osteochondritis dissecans, elbow bursitis, entrapped nerves, stress fractures or a broken arm.
Depending on the condition, elbow pain can be sharp, stabbing, have a dull ache, be stiff or have painful movement.
WHAT CAUSES ELBOW PAIN?
Here are some common causes of elbow pain:
- Repetitive micro-trauma (golfers/tennis elbow)
- Overuse (manual labour)
- Poor posture (shoulders rounding forward)
Once other diseases or fractures have been ruled out, the primary cause of elbow pain is mechanical. Poor alignment/posture of the neck and shoulder will often put pressure further ‘downstream’ of the elbow. The nerves that supply the elbow joint such as the radial nerve start in the neck.
If the bones of your spine are not aligned well, it places significant pressure on the bones, ligaments, muscles, discs and nerves surrounding the neck, which can refer pain down into the elbow.
This alignment issue creates all kinds of pain and dysfunction in the elbow.
MASK THE SYMPTOMS or CORRECT THE CAUSE?
There are two ways you can go about fixing carpal tunnel.
1. MASK THE SYMPTOMS:
Mask the symptoms of the elbow pain through medication, or ‘quick fix’ methods. Sure, this will help remove the immediate pain you are experiencing, however, it is not correcting the underlying cause of the problem.
The problem is likely to return.
Many people spend lots of time and money addressing the pain without ever addressing the cause of elbow pain. They have many bouts of elbow pain throughout their life. As they age, the duration and severity of their elbow pain increases.
2. CORRECT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM:
Instead of just masking the symptoms as they appear, you can look for what is causing the elbow pain and resolve that issue.
Imagine having a stone in your shoe. It would cause pain every time you step on it. You could mask the pain by taking a panadol, putting a band-aid on your wound or wear some thick socks while you walk. Or, your could remove the stone. Chiropractic’s focus is ‘removing the stone.’
The ‘stone’ in the case of elbow pain is poor spinal alignment/poor posture, putting pressure on the elbow and the nerves that supply the elbow.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC HELP ELBOW PAIN?
At Proactive Health Chiropractic we take a holistic approach to elbow pain. We assess elbow and your entire body rather than only looking at your elbow.
We do this through assesses and correction your posture. Your posture is your spinal alignment, or how well your bones balance. If the alignment, particularly in your neck or shoulders is off this can create problems in the elbow. By correcting your alignment, this takes pressure off the muscles, ligaments, discs, and nerves of the neck, shoulder and elbow. The removal in pressure allows the body to heal naturally.
Much like removing the stone from your shoe. Once the stone is gone, the wound will heal.
Correcting your spinal alignment/shoulder/elbow with chiropractic care coupled with specific elbow adjustments helps you get relief of elbow pain as well as preventing the problem from returning in the future.
By ensuring your spine has great alignment it also takes pressure off your nerve system. Your nerve system is responsible for sending and receiving messages from your brain and body. A clear communication pathway between the brain and body allows your body to heal and function at its very best.
