Dizziness is the experience of feeling like the room is moving, or you are moving. You feel wobbly and off centre. Much like the experience you get from a rollercoaster ride.
There are many types of dizziness including: cervicogenic dizziness (dizziness caused from your neck), vertigo, Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s disease, Anxiety, lightheadedness from low blood pressure.
WHAT CAUSES DIZZINESS?
Due to the many types of dizziness it is important to correctly identify what type of dizziness you are suffering from.
Here are some common causes:
- Poor posture/spinal alignment
- Ear infections
- Ear Injury
- Low blood pressure
- Neurological conditions
Once we have ruled out more serious causes of dizziness such as neurological disorders or other pathology the most common cause of dizziness we see is cervicogenic dizziness (dizziness caused from your cervical spine).
This type of dizziness occurs from trauma in the neck, or poor spinal alignment. The poor alignment of the spine causes increase pressure on the nerves in the neck and the whole nervous system which can result in dizziness.
MASK THE SYMPTOMS or CORRECT THE CAUSE?
There are two ways you can go about fixing dizziness:
1. MASK THE SYMPTOMS:
Mask the symptoms of dizziness through medication, or ‘quick fix’ methods. Sure, this will help remove the immediate symptoms you are experiencing, however, it is not correcting the underlying cause of the problem, your spinal alignment.
The problem is likely to return.
Many people spend lots of time and money addressing the symptoms without ever addressing the cause of dizziness. They have many bouts of dizziness throughout their life.
2. CORRECT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM:
Instead of just masking the symptoms as they appear, you can look for what is causing dizziness and resolve that issue.
Imagine having a stone in your shoe. It would cause pain every time you step on it. You could mask the pain by taking a panadol, putting a band-aid on your wound or wear some thick socks while you walk. Or, your could remove the stone. Chiropractic’s focus is ‘removing the stone.’
The ‘stone’ in the case of cervicogenic dizziness is poor spinal alignment/poor posture.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC HELP WITH DIZZINESS?
At Proactive Health Chiropractic, we take a holistic approach to dizziness, assess your entire body to find the cause.
We do this primarily through assessing and correcting your posture. Your posture is your spinal alignment, how well your spinal bones balance. By correcting your alignment, this takes pressure off the muscles, ligaments, discs, and nerves particular in the cervical spine/neck. This removal of pressure can help reduce the severity of the dizziness symptoms.
Much like removing the stone from your shoe. Once the stone is gone, the wound will heal.
Correcting your spinal alignment with chiropractic care helps you get relief of dizziness as well as preventing the problem from returning in the future.
By ensuring your spine has great alignment it also takes pressure off your nerve system. Your nerve system is responsible for sending and receiving messages from your brain and body. A clear communication pathway between the brain and body allows your body to heal and function at its very best.
