CARPAL TUNNEL OVERVIEW:
Carpal Tunnel is a condition of the wrist. It creates pain, numbness and weakness in the wrist, it can affect one or both of the hands, most often the person’s dominant hand.
WHAT CAUSES CARPAL TUNNEL?
Carpal Tunnel is causes by the impingement of the median nerve in your wrist. The median nerve starts in your neck and makes it way down the arm to your wrist and hand. The nerve can therefore get impinged in the neck, the shoulder, the elbow, or the wrist itself. It is our job as chiropractors to determine where the obstruction is taking place and clear it.
Here are some common causes of carpal tunnel:
- Poor posture (head forward of shoulders)
- Rounded shoulders
- Shoulder problems
- Repetitive overuse (mouse and keyboard)
- Manual work (sewing, hammer, hairdressing)
- Elbow Problems
- Wrist Problem
- Prolonged Sitting
- Poor Sleeping position
- Trauma to the neck or spine
Once other diseases have been ruled out, the primary cause of carpal tunnel is often poor spinal alignment of the spine (seen in poor posture) or wrists. If the bones of your spine are not aligned well, it places significant pressure on the median nerve as it exits your neck. This can cause pain, numbness and weakness further ‘downstream’ at the wrist.
MASK THE SYMPTOMS or CORRECT THE CAUSE?
There are two ways you can go about fixing carpal tunnel.
1. MASK THE SYMPTOMS:
Mask the symptoms of the carpal tunnel through medication, or ‘quick fix’ methods. Sure, this will help remove the immediate pain and weakness you are experiencing, however, it is not correcting the underlying cause of the problem, your spinal alignment.
The problem is likely to return.
Many people spend lots of time and money addressing the pain without ever addressing the cause of carpal tunnel. They have many bouts of carpal tunnel throughout their life. As they age, the duration and severity of their carpal tunnel tends to increase.
2. CORRECT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM:
Instead of just masking the symptoms as they appear, you can look for what is causing carpal tunnel and resolve that issue.
Imagine having a stone in your shoe. It would cause pain every time you step on it. You could mask the pain by taking a Panadol, putting a band-aid on your wound or wear some thick socks while you walk. Or, your could remove the stone.
Chiropractic’s focus is ‘removing the stone.’ The ‘stone’ in the case of carpal tunnel is poor spinal alignment/poor posture putting stress on the median nerve.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC HELP CARPAL TUNNEL?
Chiropractic’s approach to carpal tunnel is a holistic approach, looking at your entire body, not just your wrist and hand.
We do this through assessing and correcting your posture plus adjustments of your wrist, elbow and shoulder. Your posture is your spinal alignment, how well your spinal bones balance. By correcting your alignment, in particular in your neck and shoulders helps to take pressure off the median nerve, and other joints helping the body naturally heal.
Much like removing the stone from your shoe, once the stone is gone, the wound will heal.
Correcting your spinal alignment with chiropractic care helps you get relief of carpal tunnel as well as preventing the problem from returning in the future.
By ensuring your spine has great alignment it also takes pressure off your nerve system. Your nerve system is responsible for sending and receiving messages from your brain and body. A clear communication pathway between the brain and body allows your body to heal and function at its very best.
